Dulse Seaweed

Dulse Seaweed (Rhodymenia palmetta)

Mainstream beauty experts have long celebrated the skin benefits of green seaweed.  However, for two long years our owner patiently studied the efficacy of Dulse (Palmaria palmata), which is colloquially known as “RED” seaweed -- owing to its gorgeous burgundy hue.  Dulse (pronounced dullis) is a truly organic, hand-harvested seaweed that abounds in the North Atlantic and Northwest Pacific.  It is there that this eccentric red seaweed grows on the rocks -- where it is wild-crafted and sustainably harvested without disturbing crop rejuvenation.  With respect to skin benefits, Dulse Seaweed is full of lipids, proteins, minerals and vitamins that are readily absorbed into the skin.  Upon absorption, Dulse rebalances, nourishes, detoxifies, purifies, oxygenates and deeply moisturizes the skin’s texture and tone.  Dulse is also an excellent source of amino acids, as well as Vitamins A, C, B1, B12, D, E, K & P – thereby making it ideal for forcing toxins from stagnant cells.  The use of Dulse Seaweed also stimulates and improves blood and lymph circulation, while combating premature aging, environmental stressors and the impact of poor nutrition and pollution – all of which take a terrible toll on the skin.  What’s more, the seawater in Dulse Seaweed is very similar to human plasma, thus making it ideal for cleansing, toning and soothing human skin – all while regenerating broken capillaries and the skin's tissue, to render a more youthful appearance.  Best of all, when our customers started to use our Dulse Seaweed Scrubs & Butters, they reported superb anti-cellulite benefits.  Thus, if you desire a sustainably chic, highly nutritious body scrub and a super anti-cellulite treatment (as our customers have reported), our Dulse Seaweed Scrubs is nothing short of astounding.  In all of its nutritious glory -- perfection awaits!
There are a number of alternate names for dulse seaweed including sea parsley, dilsk, creathnach, and söl. Formally, the seaweed is identified as Palmaria palmata. The algae is high in vitamins, especially vitamin B, and it also supplies a lot of fiber and a comparatively large amount of protein. In regions where other plants do not grow well, dulse seaweed has traditionally been an important dietary supplement. Many people acquired a taste for the alga, and continue eating it for pleasure.

Individuals living close to coastal regions have been eating sea vegetables for thousands of years. Besides being very common in Japan and China, people living in Northern European countries, Ireland and Canada also appreciate one of nature's most valuable and versatile food sources. Known as an excellent source for vitamins and nutrients, sea vegetables have a very distinct taste that one may need to gradually acquire.

In the Western world, many foods lose their healthy nutrients through the preparation process. Dulse is very versatile, maintaining its high level of vitamins and proteins through any preparation process. The sea vegetable is also a good source of nonanimal protein for vegetarians.

Per the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op, dulse is approximately 22 percent protein, extremely high in vitamins B6 and B12, and relatively low in sodium. A small amount provides more than 100 percent of the RDA of vitamin B6, iron and fluoride as well as 66 percent RDA of vitamin B12. The sea vegetable is also quite high in vitamin A, potassium, phosphorus, manganese and iodine.

Because it is high in fiber, dulse is a very effective treatment for constipation. In years past, dulse was used to remove parasites and was also a treatment for scurvy, a condition brought about by a lack of vitamin C. Today it is a natural choice for plant nutrients essential for thyroid gland health and thyroid hormone secretion.

Dulse seaweed powder, which has been rehydrated with either water or oils, can be used as an exfoliating body treatment to remove dead skin cells and impurities. The sea vegetable is also used in conditioners to help strengthen and soften one's hair.
