German Chamomile

German Chamomile (Blue Chamomile, Matricaria recutita, Matricaria Recutica, Matricaria Chamomilla)

Calming and cooling, blue-green liquid with honey-tobacco sweet fruity odor, German chamomile oil is among the most supportive for a healthy inflammatory response to be found in nature’s pharmacopeia. Used since ancient times, this cousin of the daisy is also among the gentlest of oils, ideal for children, the elderly, and those with sensitive skin. German Chamomile oil, with its deep hue and exceptional aromatic profile, is derived from organic chamomile flowers cultivated in Nepal.

German Chamomile is a soothing, calming and balancing essential oil which is ideal for the hyperactive, workaholic types and chronic worriers. German Chamomile essential oil has a high content of Azulene, the active organic compound of Chamomile, which has powerful anti-inflammatory and skin healing properties which makes German Chamomile the most suitable essential oil to use in skincare products.

Chamomile essential oil is derived from the German Chamomile plant and is considered by some chamomile enthusiasts to have a cleaner, fresher scent. German Chamomile costs more to grow and harvest which is why it is more expensive than Roman Chamomile essential oil. Both oils have very similar properties but German Chamomile is considered a collectors essential oil and all aromatherapy enthusiasts should experience it as part of their aromatherapy journey.

The word Matricaria is derived from the Latin matrix, or womb, referring to its widespread traditional use by women for gynecological health. Chamomile comes from the Greek chamos, or ground, for its low growing habit, and melos, or apple, for the sweet apple-like scent of its blossoms.

Though they share some therapeutic properties, German, Roman and Moroccan chamomile oil are all different species. German Chamomile has a higher azulene content than its Roman counterpart. This constituent also gives the oil its characteristic blue hint. The azulene is not present in the fresh flower but is produced during the process of distillation. The longer the distillation, the deeper is the blue hue of the oil.

Chamomile is often call "the plant doctor" by botanists because of its ability to assist in the health and growth of other essential oil producing plants, especially those from the mint family.

German chamomile was worshiped by the Egyptians for its healing properties, widely employed in Hispanic folk medicine and is today one of the most widely used healing herbs, in the form of teas and tinctures, in the West.
