WHAT IS GLYCOLIC ACID?
Glycolic
acid is one of the naturally occurring fruit acids derived from sugar
cane. The active ingredients derived from fruit acids when purified are
called “Alpha Hydroxy Acids” (AHA). When used as prescribed, with a
combination of superficial peels and home maintenance, the gradual
removal of the top layer of skin will result in a fresher, rejuvenated
complexion.
HOW IT WORKS
Glycolic acid works on the
epidermis, the upper layer of the skin. The normal shedding of the dead
layer slows down with age. When applied to the skin, the acid lifts and
removes dead cells to reveal skin underneath that is smoother, fresher,
and healthier looking. Eventually, this layer becomes more uniform
after a peel resulting in a smoother feel, look, and texture of the
skin. As it works into the deeper layers of the epidermis, the
appearance of the skin is improved. This process accelerates cell
turn-over of the skin, and the new skin is revealed. Increased blood
flow through the skin produces a smooth, clear, younger looking
appearance.
Glycolic acid is so beneficial to your skin that most
scientists believe it should be included in all anti-aging skincare
products and routines. Using products that contain glycolic can improve
your skin tremendously and assist in age-related problem reversals, such
as reducing the look of fine lines and wrinkles, evening out skin tone,
hydrating dry skin, and it also improves blocked pores and acne.
What conditions is Glycolic Peel used for?
Fine
Lines & Wrinkles , Acne, Superficial Acne Scars, Acne Cysts,
Dissolve Acne Plugs, Dry Skin, Dull Complexion, Age Spots, Uneven Skin
Tone, Blackheads/Whiteheads/Comedones, Fine Wrinkles, Sun Damaged Skin,
Freckles, Hyperpigmentation, Large pores, General Skin Irregularities,
Hard skin, or aged skin on hands and feet.
HOW TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT PEEL STRENGTH:
The
most common peel strength to start at with is glycolic acid 15%, but
even this amount can be slightly irritating to skin when first starting
out. Be sure to start out slowly if you have never done a skin or
chemical peel with glycolic acid and take note of how your skin
responds. You still, however, will want to use a strength that is going
to deliver great results, so try to gradually increase the percentage
used if the first glycolic peel did not sting or bother your skin too
much.
If you have never had a chemical peel before, or if you
have sensitive skin, it is recommended that first time users start with
the 15% glycolic acid solution and leave on the skin for only 1-2
minutes. Test a tiny, small portion of your cheek to get an idea of how
well your skin will tolerate this percentage of glycolic acid. The 50%
and 60% level of Glycolic Acid Chemical Peel is recommended for people
who have used this product previously and know that their skin can
tolerate this level of strength. 70% is recommended for use on hands and
feet, or similar areas or for diluting to a milder strength.
You
may experience slight stinging or tingling while the glycolic acid is
on the skin. The skin may turn pink, but will return to its normal
colour within 1 to 2 days. When used correctly there shouldn't be any
redness, burning, or blistering. If you experience these symptoms seek
medical treatment and discontinue use. This will happen when the product
is not used correctly, you are using too high of glycolic acid
strength, or if your skin is too sensitive to handle a chemical peel. It
is normal for the skin to “peel” and appear flaky 1 to 2 days after
use. That means the product is working. This is the dead skin shedding,
allowing a healthy layer to come to the surface. If heavy peeling or
slight scabbing occurs, apply an antibiotic ointment (Neosporin) to help
speed healing.
For older or thicker skin, it is recommended to
go higher and use the 50% glycolic peel and also apply it more to attain
noticeable effects. Once you figure out how much glycolic is necessary
for your skin type, you should start to see progress within one week of
using the skin peel regimen. Results will continue and your skin will
keep improving, however, one almost always has to increase the strength
of glycolic acid in which they are using because the skin begins to
tolerate it easier.
If you are using this product to control
acne, remember that your acne will appear worse before it looks better.
The reason is that as the dead skin layers are peeled from the face,
the acne will be brought to the surface. This is actually accelerating
the healing process. In this case, don’t be discouraged and continue
recommended use to see improvement.
If your Glycolic Acid does not include neutralizer, to neutralize the acid
after you apply it to your face, you can either use plenty of water, or
mix a spoon full of baking soda with a cup of water and apply to the face. This
will cause a fizzing while it is neutralizing.
HOW OFTEN TO USE:
It
is recommended that you use the Glycolic Acid Chemical Peel solution
once weekly for 6 weeks, then rest your skin for 2 weeks (to allow skin
cells to naturally rejuvenate). After the 2 week rest, you may start
another 6 week cycle. Continue this cycle until you achieve the results
you seek in your skin. Certain scars or deep wrinkles may require
several cycles of treatment.
HOW TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT PEEL STRENGTH:
- 15% Ultra Mild Peel for 1st time users ansd sensitive skin
- 20% Extra Mild Peel for sensitive or fair skin and 1st time users.
- 30% Mild Peel for those who have already tried 15% or 20% Glycolic Peel.
- 40% Medium Peel for someone that has had a peel before, doesn't have sensitive skin, use for minor skin flaws
- 50% Medium -Strong Peel for people that have had peels before, and have acne, scars and skin flaws
- 60% Strong peel for experienced users that have acne, deeper scars, serious skin flaws
- 70% Maximum strength recommended for hands and feet or other similar areas or for diluting
Warning: This product contains alpha hydroxy acid
which may increase skin sensitivity to the sun and increase the
likelihood of sun damage or sunburn. Be certain to use sunscreen
protection of at least SPF 30 while using this product and after you discontinue use.
Precautions:
•Keep the Glycolic Peel at least a quarter of an inch away from the eyes and mucus membranes.
•If sever skin irritation occurs remove the product by rinsing with cool water immediately and consult a physician.
•Do not apply to irritated, sensitive skin or skin with open wounds or after extraction.
•Do not apply the Peel Product more than once in a 7 day Period.
•Do Not expose your face to the sun for 24 hours before or after the application of the Peel
•Do Not apply the Peel to skin that has been waxed or shaved within 24 Hours.
•When using the Glycolic Peel a stinging sensation occurs this is normal.
•If
the product is applied to an area where dermabrasions or small cuts on
the skin produce too much discomfort Neutralize the exfoliator by
rinsing with lukewarm water.
•Slight reddening of the skin may occur for a limited period of time especially with sensitive skin types
